Things to do for July 11, 2013

The Weekender

Gin and Donuts, French Movies and 70-Plus Beers

It puts the weekend in the basket.

Thursday
Tonight. Beer. Cheese. Paired. For You.
ADDITIONAL CHEESE MAY APPLY

Tonight. Beer. Cheese. Paired. For You.

The guys at Brooklyn Brewery have rounded up two Formaggio Kitchen cheesemongers to square off in a head-to-head cheese-off. Which means you’re about to eat a lot of good cheese. Paired with five Brooklyn brews. And then proclaim a winner. Oh, cheese.

French Cinema. Just So Much of It.
OOH LA LA

French Cinema. Just So Much of It.

France is on the mind. Maybe because of Bastille Day. Maybe because you’re actually French and are about to go back home or something. Or maybe because the French Film Festival kicks off tonight, screening 22 subtitled films over 18 days. Yes, one has Juliette Binoche in it.

Jul 11-28, $100-$200, MFA, 465 Huntington Ave, 617-267-9300, tickets here

Friday
Two Days. 70+ Beers. You’ve Got This.
FARMS WIDE OPEN

Two Days. 70+ Beers. You’ve Got This.

It’s hot out. Which makes you want beer. Which makes sense considering 25 New England brewers (CBC, Backlash, Notch...) will be commandeering Space 57 this weekend and letting you sample as many farmhouse saisons and summer beers as you damn well please. And you damn well please a lot.

Saturday
Gin and Donuts. Enjoy Those.
CITIZEN LANE

Gin and Donuts. Enjoy Those.

Gin and donuts. For brunch. That’s happening this Saturday at Abby Lane’s brand-new one. Gin cocktails garnished with made-to-order cinnamon donuts: yes. Smoked salmon bagel “nachos” with housemade boursin cheese: also yes. Achieving anything on your to-do list: no.

Next Saturday
A Rock-Climbing Picnic. Because... Sure.
ROCK PARTY

A Rock-Climbing Picnic. Because... Sure.

Next Saturday, the Boston Rock Gym is leading a little rock-climbing excursion to Hammond Pond. You’ll learn climbing techniques and proper knot-tying procedure, and finish with a pond-side picnic courtesy of Tryst’s Paul Turano. Might be a good week to take stock of your spandex bib inventory.

Jul 20, 9am-3pm, $65, Hammond Pond, Hammond Pond Pkwy, Newton, reserve at 781-935-7325
