Each year, the World’s 50 Best Bars releases its list of the top 50 cocktail joints around the globe. And each year, it gives us something fun to talk about — and plan vacations around.

The 2024 list just dropped at the awards ceremony in Madrid, and there's a new number one: Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City, which takes the top spot after placing third last year. The top five is rounded out by Bar Leone in Hong Kong, Sips in Barcelona, which was last year's big winner, Tayēr + Elementary in London, and Jigger & Pony in Singapore.

Handshake is situated in Mexico City's Colonia Juárez neighborhood. It's dark and moody and polished, but always fun, with unique cocktails and plenty of flair from the bar team. Drinks are presented quickly, as much of the work takes place in the lab behind the bar, where the staff enlists centrifuges and dehydrators and other things you usually need a chemistry degree to operate.

New York, London and Singapore lead the way with four entries each, but the 2024 list is a major shakeup from last year. It features bars from 28 cities, with 16 new entries spread across the globe, in cities like Bangkok, Bogotá, Guadalajara, Lima, Melbourne, Milan, São Paulo and Tokyo.
