Tale of the Tape

Gale South Beach vs. The James Royal Palm

None 11 Photos Gale South Beach & Regent Hotel and The James Royal Palm
When a hotel opens in South Beach, it’s a big deal. When two hotels open in South Beach simultaneously, well, people’s heads explode. Also, it’s cause for a tale of the tape. Below: the Gale South Beach & Regent Hotel (left) vs. The James Royal Palm (right). May the best minibar win.

Historical Significance
Gale: Built on top of an old Indian burial ground. Just kidding, but it does have the original 1941 art deco structure and terrazzo.
The James: Back in the day, the James was one of the first hotels to ever open on the beach.
The Edge: The James. Being first has to count for something.

In-Room Amenities
Gale: Italian linen sheets, a 55-inch LED TV and a bedside button that summons an emergency turndown service.
The James: A 42-inch plasma TV, a minibar with full-size bottles and organic pillows.
The Edge: The James. And the free-range bedding takes it.

The Pool Situation
Gale: A black-marble infinity pool that looks out on both the ocean and the city. Keep your head on a swivel.
The James: Two swimming pools... and a waterfall-equipped jacuzzi plunge pool.
The Edge: Tie. There are no losers here, really.

The X Factor
Gale: Access to all of the beachside offerings at the neighboring Shelborne—including chaises and chili dogs from Lucy’s Cantina Royale.
The James: Complimentary Kindles/iPads to use while you sun.
The Edge: Gale. Chili dogs taste better than Kindles.
