Reinventing the Wheel

Like Zipcar for Bikes

UD - DecoBike Today, on a special episode of UrbanDaddy Miami...

You’re attending your tuxedo tai chi class in South Pointe Park when you get an urgent text. Something about champagne, Jessica Biel and the pool at the Standard. Problem: your car is parked back at your building, traffic is thick, and those champagne bottles won’t stay chilled forever.

Solution: DecoBike, Miami’s first bike-sharing system, and the easiest way to cycle around the city without owning a bicycle, launching today.

This is like having a personal fleet of cruisers strategically placed throughout the city, available for all your last-minute erranding needs.

Here’s how it works: next time you need to make a quick jaunt from West Ave to Lincoln (sometimes happy hour at Doraku just sneaks up on you), you’ll locate one of the 50 or so yellow ATM-like kiosks and swipe your membership card. (It’s about $15/month for unlimited 30-minute rides; every half-hour after that’ll run you four bucks.)

Then, you’ll grab a gray cruiser and pedal on out. When you’ve reached your destination, you can return the bike to a new docking space and be on your way. And in case you forget where the pit stops are, there’s an iPhone app available to track down the closest spots, all of which are open 24 hours a day.

Perfect for predawn wheelies on the Venetian.
