Sushi and Japanese Daiquiris on the Beach

Today is a big day. That’s right: it’s Pi Day.

And we’re pretty sure you’ll want to celebrate the mathematical splendor of 3.14 the only way you know how: with lots of sake and grilled meats.

And we’ve found just the place...

Behold SAIA, a new bastion of Japanese cocktails, maki rolls and the first teppanyaki grill to grace Lauderdale beach, now open at the B Ocean Fort Lauderdale in Broward.

First: yes, this place (pronounced “Saya”) is a half-hour drive north on A1A into the heart of Spring Break madness. But soon the melee will subside and you’ll need a classy Asian spot for entertaining clients in Broward or courting that Panthers ice dancer (hockey cheerleaders can be picky about their sake).

You’ll start at the glowing marble sushi bar, in full view of the teppan grill (kind of like Benihana, minus the shrimp-throwing). Start off with an Asian Old Fashioned (made with soju, lemon and honey), and the Ginger-Lime Daiquiri for her. Soon you’ll be feasting on rolls spiced with garlic and cilantro, sharing bowls of Thai Curry Lobster and skewering Wagyu beef.

But for those nights when you’re willing to go full-on Lauderdale, there’s the Scorpion Bowl, a fishbowl containing every kind of alcohol at the bar (sake, shochu and plum wine), big enough for four.

It’s the Japanese Long Island Iced Tea.
