Stargazing is easy.

You just look up.

But understanding where to look, or what you're looking at... that's less easy.

So you could study the cosmos for years, learning all you can about the universe and the celestial bodies within.

Or, you could get these Envision Smart Binoculars. They're a bit like cheating, but we won't tell.

The binoculars come from Unistellar, the same team that brought you this smart telescope. So, they know their way around intelligent optical gadgets. The new binoculars were fully funded via a Kickstarter campaign, but you can still back the project to get a discount when products are ready to ship.

These things do all the usual binocular stuff — you know, 10x magnification and the like. But where it gets really interesting is via the "augmented reality precision orientation system," which overlays contextual data into your field of view to explain what you're seeing.

It works with everything from mountain peaks, trails and bodies of water to stars, comets, galaxies, planets and nebulae, popping up names, altitudes, distances and other helpful info

All-in, the company says that the binoculars support more than 1,000 astronomical points and more than one million terrestrial points. You can request a point of interest or let the device guide you toward nearby features. So, you won't get bored anytime soon. And if you find something you like, you can lock onto the target and share it with a friend, so they are guided to the same point.

We've come a long way since the sundial.
