Genever.
It's the Dutch grandmother to gin.
And maybe the next big baby name in Hollywood.
But all you really need to know right now is that it's also a fetching gin bar that you should bring a date to.
Again, that's Genever, a sublime nocturnal destination now soft-open in Historic Filipinotown from a trio of female friends. Check it out.
This could be the new arrow in your date-night quiver. An exquisitely intimate salon that perpetually feels like witching hour after one of Fitzgerald's party scenes, when only the dearest guests are permitted to linger on through the night.
Squire someone lovely to the gold door on Beverly. Suddenly find yourself below a Beaux Arts ceiling and beautiful glass chandeliers wrapped in bike chains, holding a fish-shaped mug full of cocktail beneath gold walls hand-painted with a flapper and peacock feathers that discretely bear the names of the bar's Kickstarter investors.
But you'll probably want the semi-private alcove in back after obtaining your drinks from the laminated black bar below a tower of 26 gins, four Genevers and a host of other bottles.
For drinks, may we suggest a Lost Angel with gin, bitter melon, aperol, singani and winter melon bitters? Or the Vice Versa, melding strawberry-and-pink peppercorn shrub with egg white, hibiscus syrup and Dorothy Parker gin? Those will be made by a Sweet Chick/Tintorera vet, who subtly weaves Filipino influences into her drinks.
Hence suggesting them.
