Once upon a time, a pope ate a pizza and loved it.
But more on that in a minute.
First, all hail Don Antonio by Starita, the second location of New York’s Neapolitan pie joint where the pizza dough is fried, the cocktails are Italian and there’s a part about a pope eating a pizza that we’ll get to in a minute, now soft-open in the former STG spot.
You’ve been searching for somewhere like this. Smells like a Naples dairy farm. Looks like an old-school Italian movie set. Tastes like pizza.
Tell the hostess to take you to the marble counter. Two 850-degree wood-burning ovens live behind it. They put pre-fried pizza dough in those and finish it off in 90 seconds with things like imported smoked cheese and tomato sauce. Grab a Trasteverino cocktail (artichoke liqueur, limoncello, pistachio-rimmed glass) while you wait 90 seconds.
And yes. Right. About that pie the Vatican selected to be presented to the former pope. It exists. It’s called Pizza del Papa (Pope’s Pizza) and it’s covered in buffalo mozzarella, butternut squash and zucchini.
To-do list for January 8, 2014:
