Things we have in common with the upper Midwest right now:
1. The freezing temperatures.
2. This bar.
Welcome to Ivy & Coney, a pleasantly divey love letter to Chicago and Detroit, now open in Shaw. Here’s what you need to know...
You might miss it. So look for the black door with a graffiti-ish message about how they do small plates, mojitos and cupcakes. It actually has none of that. Just a bar with lockers behind it, a room with antique sofas, a couple TVs and murals of Harry Caray and Sparky Anderson. Oh, and Johnny Cash giving you the one-finger salute. (Relatedly, the place is cash only.)
They don’t do “cocktails.” But they’ve got a tightly curated selection of hooch with which they’d be happy to make you a gin and tonic. Ditto on the beer—just a few, listed on the chalkboard by region (Old Style, Bell’s).
Nothing’s more than six bucks. That includes the aforementioned booze, plus the Chicago dogs with the works, Coney dogs with chili, peanuts and Cracker Jack.
A roof deck is coming in the spring. Expect picnic tables, a kitchen that turns out Chicago beef sandwiches and maybe even a retractable roof.
Which feels a bit more like Toronto.
