DCity Smokehouse doesn’t give you much to complain about.
Except maybe that it’s too small. And it’s conspicuously lacking in the bar department.
The invisible hand of the market is at work, because here’s Wicked Bloom DC Social Club, the BBQ joint’s little brother of a bar, right around the corner. It opens today.
Pretty small, unpretentious place here. (Check it out.) Used to be a Subway, in fact. And yes, that’s a Subway “S” on the wall, alongside some fake grass and wooden crates filled with volumes of Shakespeare and James Fenimore Cooper and the Encyclopaedia Britannica “Lor” to “Mec” volume.
And you’re probably sitting underneath those, in the reclaimed church pews. Or at the small, two-sided bar. And you’re probably drinking beer from a can, or cocktails like the tiki-ish The Circle Is Complete, with blackstrap rum, housemade falernum and coconut.
By now, you’re also smelling the smoke from next door. You’ll find some different stuff on the menu here, but it’s all in keeping with what they do—a Hot Brown with smoked turkey breast, or The Smokehouse Bomb, a mac-and-cheese waffle topped with brisket chili and chopped pork.
It’s about as far from Belgium as you can get.
