The Back 100's Best Asian Restaurants

Shaanxi-style Chinese on a quiet block in the Outer Sunset. Korean barbecue of the highest order. Dim sum paired with Belgian beer. From now on, you leave no stone unturned when it comes to your Asian repasts.

The Mission · Restaurant
The second outpost of Southeast Asian¬–style street food and cocktails from James Syhabout. There’s some crazy stuff on the menu.
Outer Sunset · Food
It's all about the noodles at this Shaanxi-style Chinese restaurant on a quiet block in the Outer Sunset. They're all freshly made and are worth trying in the Shaanxi mian-pi (knife cut, with chili oil and sesame paste), the biangbiang noodles with lamb (the hand-pulled noodles are wide; the lamb, cumin-laced) and the Quishan pork noodle soup, which boasts one long, pliant noodle symbolizing good luck swimming in a rich, spicy-sour broth. The Chinese burgers with split pita-like bread loaded with lamb or pork are worth sampling, too.
Inner Sunset · Food
There's pho, and then there's pho from Yummy Yummy. The massive, steaming bowls are filled with what might be liquid gold as far as we're concerned. There's no bad order at this straightforward Inner Sunset spot, but we're partial to the pho tai—beef noodle soup with rare steak (which cooks perfectly in the fragrant, star anise-laced broth) that is more or less guaranteed to cure what ails you.
Outer Richmond · Food
If the rich, meaty smells wafting from this sleepy Outer Richmond corner are any indication, Hal Il Kwan is the real deal for cook-at-your-table Korean barbecue. Come with a group and some big appetites and prepare to feast hard on spicy bulgogi, marinated pork and crispy-bottomed bi bim bap. The banchan is generous enough to make a meal out of, and don't be shy when it comes to asking for refills.
The Castro · Food
Dim sum and Belgian beer may not seem like the most obvious of pairings, but it takes just one time at Mama Ji's for everything to suddenly make perfect, delicious sense. As you load up on dumplings (steamed and fried), melty rice noodle rolls and barbecue pork buns, the thought of a cold, heady tripel will quickly sound... good. Nay, perfect. Weekend and weekday brunch are fine times for the dim sum magic, but much of the standout dim sum dishes are also available at dinner.
