Travis Lett Turns Japanese. Figuratively.

The Gjelina crew just opened a Japanese place inside a big black spaceship on Abbot Kinney. It’s spelled MTN but pronounced “mountain,” and deals in costly interpretations of izakaya fare like snapper sashimi, chicken karaage and pork ramen. Again, it’s “mountain.”

Now open, MTN, 1305 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, 424-465-3313

Tennessee powerhouse Valerie June and soul legend Irma Thomas play a gratis show on the pier tomorrow. Watch them from the crowd. Or hear them beside friends and a picnic on the beach. Or while revolving 130-feet over the ocean on an illuminated Ferris wheel like a normal person.

Brooklyn’s Four & Twenty Blackbirds is in Venice this weekend, doling out its famous matcha custard and salty honey pies whole and by the slice at Jeni’s Splendid. It also made special pies for us, including a stone fruit granola one and a shaker citrus one. True. We enjoy citrus.

Sunday
