We’ll journey to Scribner’s Catskill Lodge, an attractive place to stay nights, eat even-localer food than anywhere here and sip whiskey next to fire. It’s open now in the upstate town of Hunter. Actually, it’s been open for a long time, but it just got completely renovated, so we’re treating it as new. Here’s what you’ll find:
A hotel, obviously.
Thirty-eight rooms’ worth of hotel, whose rooms you can see mountains and gardens from through floor-to-ceiling windows, standing atop vintage rugs or private decks. A charming situation, in sum.
A restaurant called Prospect.
It’ll be super locavore, since the Hudson Valley is a verdant one, so the menu will change daily, but expect things like rabbit roulade and Berkshire pork chops. To drink: cocktails with stuff like persimmon, apple-rosemary shrub, maple syrup and other things that would be equally welcome in a meal as in a drink.
A whiskey bar overlooking it.
Excellent thing to have overlooking something else.
Live music, spa treatments, après-ski happy hours, art talks, cocktail classes.
Yeah, you could just come and do glorious nothing. But you could also come and not do nothing.
Fireplaces.
In the library lounge. In some of the rooms. Just fireplaces everywhere.
Wood.
As befits something touting itself as a lodge. Outside in the form of coniferous trees, inside in the form of modern interior design. It’s a woodsy spot (take a look).
Hiking trails and rivers.
They have those in these parts. Twenty acres’ worth of forest and meadow and all sorts of things that bring about wistful looks and thoughts on more stressful days here in the city.
A pool.
That’ll be accessible at a time when there wouldn’t be ice floating in it.
