We assume you’re familiar with the phrase “They go together like bourbon and bagels.”
No? Huh.
Must be a J&J Bourbon Bar & Grill thing. It’s a bar with bourbon options in the triple digits, and it’s now open in the former Belly General Store space in Virginia Highland. (Please, have a slideshow.)
Yes, this used to be Belly. And while it’s not Belly anymore, it still has their breakfast and lunch setup as well as their kitchen crew. Oh, and a couple added benefits like a throng of brown liquor and a late-night menu that’s served until 3am on weekends.
It’s changed quite a bit. The brick is more exposed, the place is more open, and they’ve added a bunch of charred barn wood. Textbook make-everyone-feel-like-they’re-in-a-bourbon-barrel technique.
And while we assume you’ll be in early for bagels and sandwiches, we’re certain you’ll be back later for their spread of 100 whiskeys (soon to be 140) and a double-malt-marinated NY strip. Or shrimp and grits because they also put shrimp and grits in there.
So call some friends. Do things. Then step in here sometime after midnight and sit near the roll-up garage door. It’s the optimal spot for both warm summer breezes and admiring glances from passersby.
That happens before midnight, too.
