Three reasons you can be excused for thinking about moving to LA.
1) Nicer weather in February, we hear.
2) Frequent random encounters with starlets.
3) Iconic donuts.
Actually, scratch No. 3 off the list.
Yes, Stan’s Donuts & Coffee, a 50-year-old Westwood donut-ery, is giving the Windy City a shot. It opens tomorrow in Wicker Park.
For a half century, this guy—his name, funnily enough, is Stan—has turned out bismarcks, orange old-fashioneds and apple fritters from a little joint near UCLA.
Now, he’s teamed up with the guy who founded Labriola Bakery. There are a few simple decor accents here like brightly colored mixers on the shelves, and the latest in coffee-making gadgetry to brew your joe to order. But honestly, you’re here for donuts. More specifically:
—Yeast-raised, pistachio-glazed old-fashioneds.
—Maple caramel bacon donuts.
—Peanut butter banana pockets.
—Chocolate pretzel twists.
—Chocolate cream cheese pockets.
They’ll be open late on weekends. But remember, they’re across from Glazed & Infused, so if you ever find yourself around here after dark, itching for something jelly-filled, you’re going to be in the middle of a turf war.
A delicious turf war.
