The time: 2am.
The place: Henderson Avenue.
The date: sometime in the not-too-distant future.
The Old Monk has poured its last Boulevard Wheat. Victor Tangos is all out of chicken and waffles. The Beauty Bar hipsters have scattered for the evening.
But the party doesn’t have to end. And this weekend, it won’t...
Because on the edge of Henderson sits Velvet Taco, a new late-night taco joint, open 24 hours Thursday through Saturday for your 2am calamari taco cravings, slated to debut later this week.
First, picture a Church’s Chicken. (There’s no judging in the world of after-hours tacos.) Now, imagine the guys from Bolsa overhauled one with wooden walls, two massive beer-garden-style tables and a white-and-pink counter. Then, you’ll have this place.
If you’re here before a Guinness-fueled evening at the Capitol Pub, you’ll power up with the sorbet-based frozen margaritas and calamari tacos—the latter come adorned with Korean BBQ sauce and habanero-pineapple salsa.
But this weekend at around 2am, you’ll follow your instincts (or the glowing taco on the building) here. Make your way to the neon “Order Here” sign, summon a round of potentially lifesaving pork tacos (including those made with a poached egg drowning in queso) and settle into a white stool looking over Henderson.
And come September they’ll be rolling out their full breakfast menu.
Spoiler alert: there are tacos.
