Coming off one great American holiday and eagerly awaiting another, let’s dwell for a moment on the
star-spangled majesty of the car chase.
The burning rubber, the dramatic downshifting, the chorizo sliders and serrano-infused tequila...
Introducing The Getaway, a multilevel restaurant and bar with a healthy car fetish, now serving a limited menu in Columbia Heights in advance of their grand opening this weekend.
Built on the bones of the old Social, this is named for the McQueen movie of the same name. So you won’t be surprised to find plenty of black and white photos of him and Newman with vintage cars, motorcycles, mustaches (never mind, that was Burt Reynolds) and chimpanzees (never mind, that was Eastwood).
In cooler months, the leather couches next to massive picture windows will beckon. But for now, you’ll want to post up at the 40-seat sidewalk café, or the 20-seat sundeck, the better to tuck into drinks like The Honey Moon Machine (muddled grapes, pisco, St-Germain) and a menu that includes five different sliders (fried green tomato, BBQ short rib among them).
Of course, when the thunderstorms hit, you’ll need some refuge inside. For that, descend into the moody first-floor bar, where amid vintage movie posters you can order up classic comfort food like cowboy steak with chimichurri sauce and seared diver scallops.
You knew your fingerless gloves would come in handy one day.
