The City's Best Hidden Cocktail Gems

You can go anywhere in this city and get a cocktail. Then again, where’s the fun in that? These tucked away cocktail spots play hard to get, but we trust you’ll know what to do once you find them.

The Mission · Bar
Easily the best bar-within-a-bar San Francisco has to offer, the Hideout is an aptly, creatively named cocktail destination hidden in the upstairs back room at Dalva. Red walls, Farrah Fawcett posters and a nice selection of delicious but not overwrought drinks more or less guarantee that you'll be bringing a date here. It's a very, very good place for that, as evidenced by all of the other dates you'll inevitably see happening around you. Be sure to snag a glass of Goldfish crackers from the downstairs bar for sustenance.
Tenderloin · Bar
Benjamin Cooper is simultaneously hidden inside the Hotel G (behind two unmarked doors, upstairs from Brasserie 398) and in Union Square, a part of town we'd almost never consider for great cocktails. But great cocktails there are, in abundance, from a team of former Big bartenders, no less. There's also velvet banquettes and a handsome walnut bar, plus raw oysters should you feel so inclined. Guessing that's a pretty likely inclination.

What's not to love about a hidden-yet-expansive cocktail bar, tucked upstairs from San Francisco's best Thai restaurant, replete with Jodorowski references and featuring a menu of dictator-themed cocktails? That's right: nothing. Unmarked save a neon-lit, halo-topped mountain, Holy Mountain feels like a needed escape from the chaos that is life. Or a nice place to drink drinks and eat Thai-spiced fried chicken. Either way, it's a fine place to bring a date or a group.
Hayes Valley · Nightlife
A tiny bar hidden behind Kim Alter's Nightbird, Linden Room has just eight seats, two of which should most definitely be yours on your next drinks date. That is, if your date likes things like plush red leather stools, a gold-glowing bar and a vibe that screams Palace Hotel circa-1934 (or whispers it in dulcet tones). The consistently excellent drinks change with the season and often feature fresh produce.

Of course a beloved Mission market is also home to a tiny, funky bar tucked in the back among shelves laden with beer and wine. Named for the market's LLC and the owner's family name (Horsens), Horsie's has a fine selection of low-ABV drinks, plus beers, wines, and plenty of charming kitsch. The bar is open when the market is, meaning an 8 or 9am Horsie's Mary is absolutely fair game.
