The Best Places to Take a First Date

First Dates can be tricky. You don’t want to go too fancy, you don’t want to go to casual and you definitely don’t want to go anywhere other than these places. There, now they’re less tricky.

Hayes Valley · Bar
Biergarten is the second venture from the family behind Suppenkuche, so you know it's great. You and your hopefully-more-than-friend will approach this fenced-off, outdoor beer garden in Hayes Valley and jockey for a seat at one of several picnic tables. Grab traditional German beers that come in liter steins, or half-liter if you must. Make sure to grab a pretzel knot covered in Emmenthaler or prosciutto to complete your Oktoberfest dreams.
The Mission · Bar
Housed in a former record store on 20th Street, this Mission wine bar works as a one drink see-if-you-get-along date as well as a let's-split-a-bottle-and-share-some-oysters situation. Regardless, the mid-century modern space feels sleek, yet effortless
Inner Richmond · Bar
High Treason is what happens when a pair of fine dining sommeliers (from Gary Danko and Meadowood, to be more specific) grow tired of industry pretension and open a wine bar where you can relax and listen to an eclectic, excellent soundtrack spun on vinyl. The wine list is unique and extensive, and goes nicely with the selection of Spanish conservas (they have large plates on offer, too, if that's how your night goes). Assuming your date is a fan of good wine, food, music, or all three, things should go alright here.
The Mission · Lounge
Leather sofas and velvet chairs surround low-slung cocktail tables in this cozy cocktail bar from the PumpJack Group. Light-filled in the early evening and pleasantly sultry after dark, Wildhawk has a fine selection of cocktails, plenty of corners for intimate conversation, and cheese and charcuterie boards should you find the evening lingering on. Basically, this bar has everything a good first date requires, including talking points: it's named after a notorious 19th-Century showgirl named Lola Montex, who was often referred to as a "wild hawk." Just in case you want to drop that in.
