Mostly, you need to be looking straight ahead when you're traveling. Not down. Not at a screen. Not for texts. Not for social media.

But there are a few instances for which we're willing to make an exception. Like when you're using one of these six under-the-radar travel apps. They're here to help you make the most of your vacation, and they're available now, wherever it is you download apps these days.

Relay
What it does: Helps you create custom maps marking whatever restaurants, bars or otherwise touristy destinations you want to visit during your trip.
When you’ll use it: On those short trips to big cities where there’s an overwhelming amount of things to see.

Cool Cousin
What it does: Hooks you up with like-minded locals ready to suggest a bunch of things you can’t easily find on TripAdvisor.
When you’ll use it: Whenever you’re in Paris, Rio, Barcelona, Lisbon or fourteen other cool cities, and find yourself in the mood for a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese place or hidden dive bar.

Sidekix
What it does: Designs walking routes from A to B around the things you’d like to see and do along the way.
When you’ll use it: When you’ve got some time to kill before dinner. And also feel obligated to see some art.

The Emirates App
What it does: Let’s you search and book flights, check-in online, download your boarding pass and manage your journey, all at the tap (or taps) of a finger.
When you’ll use it: Pretty much whenever you need to catch a flight to almost anywhere in the world.

Detour
What it does: Turns your phone into a compendium of 150 walking tours in any number of cities, and, in its latest iteration, uses augmented reality to allow you to peel back reality and see history come to life.
When you’ll use it: In the more-than-off chance you oversleep and miss that popular free walking tour.

Hippo
What it does: Gives professional photographers access to your photos, so they can help make them the best they can be.
When you’ll use it: When you visit the Eiffel Tower and want your Eiffel Tower Instagram to be better than everyone else’s Eiffel Tower Instagram.
