1923: the now-iconic, beaux-arts-style London Guarantee Building was completed.
During the ’60s and ’70s: it housed Chicago’s preeminent jazz club, the London House, which played host to everyone from Sarah Vaughan to Oscar Peterson.
Today: you have this slideshow.
Not to mention, what it represents. The new, 452-room LondonHouse hotel’s much-anticipated trilevel rooftop lounge, the LH Rooftop. It’s currently soft-open, and the hotel is taking reservations through June now.
To get here, you’ll stroll through the entrance on Wacker (part of a 22-story, all-glass skyscraper within the restored building) and make for the 21st floor.
Whereupon you’ll be presented with three stories: LH on 21, LH on 22 and the Cupola.
LH on 21
You're cozied up with someone lovely in a low-ceilinged den adjoining the main dining room, splitting a dry-and-wet-aged tomahawk steak. A band plays. You take a sip of your Chicago Cocktail (cognac and sherry topped with champagne). If romance is cedarwood smoke from their smoked salmon tartare, it’s totally in the air.
LH on 22
Some friends. Some champagne-centric libations. Some small bites from downstairs. A truly unbeatable vista. It’s the happy hour of the century.
The Cupola
You rent out the restored, lit-up cupola perched above the 22nd floor for a private dinner.
Consequently, you win the game we call life.
