Either Oar

It’s Pretty Much Rowing Meets Video Games

Summer. Next year. Rio.

The Olympic rowing team calls you. They need a coxswain, pronto.

Yeah, that probably won’t happen.

But just in case... here’s Iron & Oar. It’s a gym. It’s all rowing machines. But it also involves video games. And yoga. Possibly kettlebells. Point is: it’s quite interesting and it’s soft-open now in Lakeview. (Here’s the slideshow.)

The space is small with only two workout rooms. The owner already owns one gym in Lakeview, and he’s the son of former Chicago Bears linebacker Tom Hicks. That’s not really relevant or anything, but, hey, cool.

Anyway, the small group classes (10 rowers max) are a good adjunct to your normal workout thing. Plus, you’ll use the same kinds of rowing machines that Olympian rowers train with, which probably has to count for something.

Some classes incorporate yoga routines and kettlebell workouts into the rowing. Fine. Great. But other classes will allow you to form teams and use big projection screens in front of you to compete against each other.

So, Mario Kart but healthy.
