Ain't It Grand?

Drinking Underground in Midtown

None
If you've been wondering where the party is in midtown (you know you have), you may have to do some digging underground.

Sitting pretty beneath 58th Street, The Grand, opening Thursday night, is the old Au Bar transformed into a sleek new subterannean social lounge.

Enter and descend a long flight of stairs into a shiny opal interior complete with a large hanging black chandelier and oversized hooker-red lounge chairs that give you fair warning that the night may get wild. Add tables with deep center insets where drinks won't spill if they get knocked around a little, and you just might (might) have a party north of 57th Street.

If the midtown riffraff get a little too much for you, head to the VIP area behind the keyhole-shaped doorway, where coal-tinted windows offer extra privacy and complimentary chocolate-covered strawberry service will keep your female company properly sated. And if that isn't enough, try ordering apps from midtown favorite Philippe, which are served from 12-4am (we've heard those are prime hours to enjoy Peking Duck Spring Rolls).

After all, a scene in this neck of the woods is a rare thing—above or below ground.
