Another dive bar has bitten the dust. But we think you’ll like what it’s become.
Because it’s become Stanton & Greene, soft-opening next week from some of the guys behind Sonoma and Beuchert’s.
You can check just about every Capitol Hill box in here. Like...
Lunch with the lobbyist: The main-floor dining room looks like it’s been here awhile, in a 1930s-train-station kind of way. (See the slideshow here.) Amid the subway tile and maple woodwork, you’ll want to grab a seat and get to work on oysters Rockefeller with Virginia oysters and crushed peanuts.
A fundraiser with the congressman: You’ll head upstairs. And then you’ll probably gasp. Because a giant room with 19-foot ceilings, original 1850s brick and mid-century modern leather couches will make a person do that.
A happy hour to forget about all those lunches and fundraisers: The focus here is on the drinks, developed by the bartender behind Wisdom. So you’ll find classics with a twist, like a Rusty Nail with Bulleit bourbon, Drambuie, peach liqueur and Colorado-made maraschino.
Oh, and feel free to drink at either bar—or in coming weeks, a speakeasy in the basement, which happens to be the site of the Hill’s last strip club.
Don’t get any ideas.
