The Lowdown on Two New Bakeries

None 8 Photos Dog Tag Bakery and RareSweets
You could probably sustain yourself on layer cake alone. Okay, maybe not. But layer cake and breakfast sandwiches. Definitely. Here then, a primer on two new bakeries—Dog Tag Bakery (left), now open in Georgetown, and RareSweets, opening Monday at CityCenterDC.

The Environs
Dog Tag Bakery: A two-story, modern farmhouse-y kind of place on a side street. There are comfortable red chairs and plenty of tables for lingering. Above you: a chandelier made from 3,456 dangling dog tags. (Here, take a look.)
RareSweets: Some marble here, some lights made from cake stands there. Not many tables, though.

The Breakfast
Dog Tag Bakery: They’ve got private-label coffee, plus everything bagels, mini banana breads and prosciutto-cheese croissants.
RareSweets: The coffee is La Colombe. The eggs are baked directly into brioche rolls—something they call Egg in a Basket.

The Not Breakfast
Dog Tag Bakery: A full lunch is possible—soup, curried-chicken sandwiches, the works. You can also grab a loaf of pesto ciabatta bread and some rugelach to take home.
RareSweets: It’s all about the sweets. Brown butter blondies, oatmeal cookies. But your play is a slice of cake paired with a scoop of housemade ice cream like eggnog.

Always eggnog.
