Skiing and Steak au Poivre–ing in the French Alps

You’re in France. It’s snowing. You’re staying at a great hotel and...

On second thought, maybe we’ll just tell you about it.

Practice your bonjours for Hôtel des Dromonts, a stunning mountain retreat in Portes du Soleil, which—fortunately for you and our chief reason for bringing it up—just happens to be one hell of a ski area. Anyway, it opens December 12. You should check it out.

This place first graced these snowy lands about 50 years ago. We hear it was great. But it needed an upgrade, as things do, so it closed for just that. Tack on a new outdoor terrace, restaurant, pool, spa and whole mod-’60s element, and here we are.

Our advice: book one of those 34 rooms. Preferably a suite with a view of the surrounding slopes. Then, go skiing and stuff. And après-ski, a little sauna and deep-tissue work in the new mirror-ceilinged spa sounds like a good idea. It usually does.

That’ll really loosen you up for what’s to come. Which is dinner at Les Enfants Terribles, a delightfully named bistro that knows its way around a steak au poivre.

But probably isn’t so great with kids.
