1968: Bullitt gets released. The crazy-epic Steve McQueen car chase through our hills becomes
instant legend.
2014: You close your eyes and picture yourself behind the wheel of the red Ferrari delivered to McQueen on the Bullitt set...
Though you’re probably taking those curves a bit more carefully.
Consider how good your hand would look holding the keys to Steve McQueen’s Ferrari—it’s up for bidding next Saturday at the RM Auctions in Monterey.
The specs: It’s a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti. It’s got a V-12 engine with six Weber carburetors. It... was originally painted a nice hazelnut, but McQueen immediately had it redone in Chianti red, sight unseen. Man knew his cars.
The history: McQueen drove this car for about four years, and he supposedly drove it hard. It’s currently owned by race car driver Vern Schuppan. Somewhere in between those two eras, it was owned by Guy Williams from Lost in Space. Well, okay then.
The expected price: Oh, maybe as high as $12,000,000.
So that or 4,444 Priuses.
