Sixteen Tons
What: A store in the Hampden neighborhood stuffed with American-heritage things like Schott
motorcycle jackets, Hill-side ties and Red Wing boots.
Why: You’re going all Springsteen for the summer.
It’s summer, so you’re road-tripping. Probably hitting some beach or some remote cabin. But probably not some haberdasheries. Which is too bad. Because a few of our nearby cities have been quietly amassing all manner of fine garmentry. Here now: five regional shops you should add to your agenda.
What: A store in the Hampden neighborhood stuffed with American-heritage things like Schott
motorcycle jackets, Hill-side ties and Red Wing boots.
Why: You’re going all Springsteen for the summer.
What: A Del Ray shop stocked with 20th-century vintage. Think rockabilly, Roaring ’20s,
art deco and World War II.
Why: Because Broadway costume designers are constantly trolling this place.
What: Casual weekend watches. Draper-goes-to-LA-style tortoiseshell sunglasses.
Swedish-made sneakers. And lots of duffels and backpacks to carry it all in.
Why: Because you’ve elevated telecommuting to an art form.
What: As befitting the name (and location), a little shop with all the herringbone, tweed
and quilted jackets you’d care to wear. And probably more.
Why: You never know when a foxhunt will break out.
What: Denim from New York, ties from Nashville, shaving stuff from Portland, bikes from
Baltimore.
Why: Because you always like to wear a nice bow tie while on a really nice bike. While
shaving.
