After 25 years of cheap beer, Tex-Mex and pool parties, J. Pepe’s is just a memory.
If only there were a new-and-improved tenant to breathe sweet, whiskey-fueled life into that historic house...
Embrace change at Vagabond, a relaxed hangout for burgers, cocktails and a little bocce in the backyard, now open Tuesday to Sunday on Greenville Ave.
Walking in, you’ve got a homey collection of dark woods, local art and glowing lamps. Plus a well-stocked bar and a build-your-own-burger menu with toppings like chimichurri and black-truffle aioli. So that ought to come in handy if you’re hungry and/or not so interested in lamps.
Now, you’ll want to swing by with a few friends to inspect that drink list. Really get hands-on with the Hydro Tonic (strawberry-shishito gin, lime and tonic) or a barrel-aged Old Fashioned. Then, do what comes naturally. Drink, talk, strategically pepper in witty anecdotes between requests for fried-chicken sandwiches.
And don’t forget to check out the backyard. You’ll probably notice the pool’s gone. Yep, it’s been filled in. But now, it’s a bocce court, and that means many fine afternoons of Italian sporting leisure.
No diving.
