Omar Little

A Sexy Dining Club in Greenwich Village

Today’s subject is Omar’s.

It’s a stone-cold fox of a semiprivate, subterranean supper club in Greenwich Village. And it’s opening Friday.

But it has nothing to do with Michael K. Williams.

Or retired major-league shortstop Omar Vizquel.

Or Doctor Zhivago.

No, the Omar in question is André Balazs’s former “director of ambience” (business card of the year). So as you might imagine, this place is... magnificent. One part subtle townhouse-like deco restaurant and bar. Another part that same thing, for members only. Both parts featuring two-man ribeyes.

The public face: it’s separately called La Ranita. You’ll descend some stairs beneath a black awning and enter a white marble bar with a mirrored seating area. This is where you’ll post up and await your date.

When said date arrives, head back to the dining room—supple orange-brown leather banquettes and cozy two-tops. Above: a wraparound Where’s Waldo–esque mural of New York and its characters. Here, you’ll investigate what salted black cod and crispy frog legs taste like by eating them.

But about that private space: it’s invite only. Mostly international culinary luminaries and neighborhood folks, so work on being one of those. Because you’ll have access to a separate entrance, the occasional spontaneous tasting menu, the coveted underground solarium and a fireplace-equipped lounge.

It’s truly a golden age for international culinary luminaries.
