Double Trouble

How to Spend Cinco de Derby

Column A: Kentucky Derby. Horses, mint juleps, Southern hospitality. Column B: Cinco de Mayo. Fiestas, margaritas, south-of-the-border hospitality. Now we present the rarely seen column C: comprised of a little from column A, a little from column B... and a little random craziness.

DRUNKIN’ DONUTS

A Donut That’s a Margarita

This could be fun. Or dangerous. Or both. The margarita-donut hybrid is here. Baked at Glazed & Infused. Soaked in tequila. Glazed with lime frosting. Sprinkled with salt. If you ever wake up married to a donut after a tequila bender, this will probably be the one.

Available May 3-5 at Taco Joint, 1969 N Halsted St, 312-951-2457

A Margarita That’s a Mint Julep

Oh, right. Kentucky Derby. You’re supposed to be drinking mint juleps, not eating margarita donuts. So we propose this: the mint julep margarita. It uses bourbon instead of tequila and it’s shaken with fresh mint. It’s sort of the grand bargain of Cinco de Derby compromises.

Where Nachos Meet Southern Pride

Start at any one of three bars during this crawl. You’ll encounter buffets of endless nachos at Schoolyard and nonstop tacos at Kirkwood. And just when you need some mini pulled-pork sandwiches, you’ll find a Southern buffet at Crossing. If you get confused, just remember beer is $2 everywhere you go.

A Crawl with a Lot of Hats

This crawl gives you: three drink tickets, expedited bar entry and—oh, nice—free hats. They’ll be distributing sombreros and floppy Derby hats among 11 bars. You can also make your own hat and enter their craziest-hat contest. Yes, literally going head-to-head.

CRAWL SPACE III

A Bar Crawl for Cinco de Mayo

By the time this bar crawl to Lottie’s Pub, Frontier and the Pony ends, the Derby will already be a memory. Unless, of course, you made a well-timed bet and you’d like to celebrate with churros, Mexican beer and tequila shots. Actually, that’s not a bad way to drown your sorrows, either.

May 5, 1-7pm, begins at Lottie’s Pub, 1925 W Cortland St, 773-489-0738
