The UWS is the new Meatpacking District.
OK, no, it's not. But with downtown weekend warriors Shake Shack, Magnolia Bakery and Mermaid Inn planting roots up there in strollertown, we've been keeping a close eye on the block.
And with tomorrow's opening of a certain Malaysian street-food shanty, your UWS options just got a little spicier: welcome to Fatty Crab uptown, opening tomorrow and here for your first little peek inside.
Everything you love about Fatty Crab in the MPD you'll love here (except the faint pulsing of house music in the distance): you can still feast on Fatty Duck and sweat your way through unpronounceable spices while you throw back a Hitachino, but you'll have a bit more elbow room and a few more Malaysian cocktails.
Walking in, you'll immediately notice the giant mural of the Kuala Lumpur skyline lording over the dining room. (And if you didn't notice it was Kuala Lumpur, you should feel free to pretend you did and bandy that about in conversation). The whole place has a muted, upscale industrial eating house vibe with a giant caged fan keeping things cool above.
Think of it as your home when you're in the mood for some UWS hipster Malaysian like Coconut Poached Bass or Watermelon Pickle and Crispy Pork.
Everyone loves watermelon pickles.
