Public restrooms. The mere thought of them can give you the heebie-jeebies. But now
that the one located near the bandstand on Boston Common—which you know as the Pink Palace—has just
become an Earl of Sandwich, you can associate one of them with lunch. Behold: three things to know
about it.
It’s been totally de-bathroom’d.
The owners (thankfully) gutted and sanitized the entire space, which has been inactive since the 1970s. In place of toilets and sinks: ovens for baking daily artisan bread, a takeout window and electricity (which it previously lacked).
If you’ve got four minutes, you’ve got time for a bite.
Let’s say it’s your lunch break, and you’re craving Angus roast beef and sharp cheddar (this happens a lot at lunch). You’ll order The Original 1762, which is served piping hot with a slathering of creamy horseradish sauce. Or if you’re building up your large-bird-consumption levels before Thanksgiving, go for the Earl’s Club (roasted turkey, smoked bacon, aged swiss).
Once the warmer weather hits, they’ll open for breakfast.
When they do, you’ll start your day in the park. Soaking up the killer views of trees and grass. Breathing the fresh air. Eating a morning breakfast sandwich, with fresh-cracked eggs, bacon and cheddar. Maybe admiring a pack of squirrels at play.
Don’t be fooled: they’re plotting against you.
