The next time you’re hanging out in a leather shop...
Wait, that came out wrong.
It’s just that, well. There’s this leather shop and...
Ah, let’s just get into it.
Presenting Mulholland, the first and only local outpost for the SF-based leather guys, now open on Market.
When you walk in, you might think you landed in an old hunting lodge or an antique store. (Seeing a 1952 Royal Enfield motorcycle, a Gold Rush–era mine siren and a table made out of elk antlers will do that to you.)
Start, naturally, on the main level. There, you can peruse their housemade gear, alongside jackets and shirts from New York–based Scott James, super-durable sunglasses from SF’s Sutro and hats from Hollywood’s Bailey Hat Company.
But the real action’s upstairs. That’s where their custom workshop is, and where you’ll help create a handsome wallet/iPad case/leather bodysuit. (Let’s just say you know someone who is very into being Catwoman for Halloween.)
Start by saying hi to Jack, the owners’ dad, who got his start making saddles. He’ll guide you through some source materials (cowhide, bison, ostrich, alligator... basically anything legal) and through more than 300 designs, ranging from lawyer’s briefcases to safari bags and footballs. They apparently made blue alligator footballs for the Dallas Cowboys back in the day.
Which would be kind of cool, if it wasn’t the Cowboys.
