Friends. Countrymen. New Yorkers. A few words on the state of the nightlife
union...
Of late, interesting scenes have bubbled up in Chinatown, Soho and the always reliable West Village, but we feel it's also our duty to report on goings-on elsewhere in town, for when you need new nightlife in some not-so-obvious parts of the city.
Citrine
Snitch was the perfect place to go when all you wanted was some Aerosmith and a bucket of Bud heavies, but new owners of the former rock club have promised to turn the slim second-floor space into a classier sort of venue, one that doesn't involve any Winger, Stryper or Ratt. Here's what you can expect:
Opening Night Party: Friday
Questionable Host Choice: Gossip king (queen?) Perez Hilton
Closest Nightlife Relative: The aforementioned and now deceased Snitch. Expect a grown-up version with softer touches, a rotating cast of "celeb" DJs, chandeliers and bottle service.
Centerpiece: You'll notice the DJ booth the minute you walk in. It's elevated above the VIP tables and situated in the center of the room, almost like a throne for a sort of musical overlord set to rule your evening and command you to dance.
411: Citrine, 59 W. 21st St (at 6th Ave), 212-727-7775, opening party is private
Aspen Social Club
You've been to Aspen (both in Colorado and the Flatiron), but it's been a while. Time for a refresher course: Stop by this new Midtown outpost for a post-work scotch with a side of bison (in the form of mini burgers, of course). Here's what you can expect:
Opening Night Party: Thursday
Questionable Host Choice: Hipster DJs of yore (you know, 2003) Misshapes
Closest Relative: Aspen, its Flatiron cousin and downtown outpost. Expect similar rustic touches that hint at a luxe version of some magical ski lodge: rough wood, tree themes, Edison bulbs and vintage sofas.
Centerpiece: Gold-plated antlers hanging above the bar, signaling all the city faux-ruggedness you can expect inside.
411: Aspen Social Club, 157 W. 47th St (between 6th and 7th Ave), 212-221-7200, soft-open now; opening party is private; look here to see more photos
