The Weekender

Giant Cakes, Elvis Burlesque and a New Irish Bar

The weekend isn’t quite sure what to do with itself.

An Old-School Cakery in Adams Morgan

Pies. Yeah, you probably had plenty of those recently. Which naturally makes you... long for cake. Here, then, the new Sugar Daddy’s Bakery. Ignore the dollhouse-ish decor and try to focus on the umpteen layer cakes arrayed on stands and bedecked with coconut, Oreos and berries. Goes well with coffee, too.

Ruh-Ro. Here’s Another Rí Rá.
BLARNEY

Ruh-Ro. Here’s Another Rí Rá.

Ah, winter. Time to hunker down as they do in Dublin... in a dark bar replete with smoked salmon, mushy peas and mussels simmered in Guinness and bacon. Oh, and plenty of Irish whiskey. Here’s such a place, as the micro-chain Rí Rá has landed on M Street. Okay, so maybe leave the mushy peas.

Now open daily at 4pm, Rí Rá, 3125 M St NW, 202-751-2111

And Now, Some Elvis Burlesque
KINGLY

And Now, Some Elvis Burlesque

Oh, what the hell. Let’s get weird. Weird like a burlesque show emceed by an Elvis impersonator and a mock fight card between... well, we’re not sure, but past years have seen giant chickens, Godzilla and Stephen Hawking take the ring. Also: there’ll be stripteases.

Where Dean Moriarty Would Shop

A new year. Which means: back to work. Also: time to stock up on tweed trousers named after Jack Kerouac, canvas jackets and chambray scarves. At least it is now that the folks at Mutiny are knocking 25% to 45% off their goods. PS: after you get those pants, people will expect a novel.

Through Jan 8 online and in-store, Mutiny, 52 O St NW, 202-500-8680

A New Whiskey Bar, a New Brewery

Time to hit Annapolis. No, not for sailing. It’s 25 degrees out. For Dry 85, a new Prohibition-looking whiskey bar, with 100-plus bottles by a former Fox 5 anchor. Or head west, to the recently opened Heritage Brewing, where you can sip brews named The Teddy and Ironsides right beside the tanks.
