You’ve finally hit a comfortable cruising altitude.

You’re in need of a drink. Maybe two.

But drinking alone is more fun when you’re with the right people. And, frankly, you wouldn’t mind getting to know the attractive stranger in the aisle seat.

Sounds like it’s time to throw a midair cocktail party. Or, you know, the closest you can get to a midair cocktail party. With the right snacks, some good cocktails and a little creativity, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Here’s how to make it happen.

Say hello to the people around you. See who’s up for some drinks.
Surely some will have their head in a newspaper or be knee-deep in a Friends marathon. Yet some will want to partake in some snacks, drinks and good conversation. (If that happens to be the couple of friends you’re flying with, well, that works, too.)

Set the scene.
Trays up, bags stowed, lights dimmed, no blankets or pillows in sight. There, you’re ready. Now...

Acquire the hors d’oeuvres.
You’ll have to see what the options are for your specific flight, but you can’t go wrong with a gourmet cheese platter and some tasty canapés. The key here: stick with things you can eat with your hands or a toothpick—we don’t have to explain why.

Get creative with the cocktails.
Ask for some gin, lemon and champagne and make yourself and your soon-to-be friends a few French 75s. (You’re so great with airline cocktail hacks.) Or you can stick with champagne. Trust us, no one will mind. No one says no to champagne.

Toast your journey. Toast your new friends. Toast your flight attendant.
Keep the mood light and celebratory.

Bottom line: it’s not a proper cocktail party until someone gets toasted.
