The Dos and Don’ts of Pregame Cocktailing

Improving Your Tailgate One Michelada at a Time

There are two distinct parts to football.

There’s the game itself.

And then there’s the too-often-overlooked but equally important pregame.

A time to relax with cocktails before you’re busy jumping up and down and making victorious touchdown arms, thereby subjecting your poor drink to possible spillage.

So to help you maximize the potential of your pregame... game, we’ve compiled some important dos and don’ts that will take your tailgate to the next level.

Keep these in a safe, dry place.

Do: Add some spice and a little lime to your beer, thereby creating the ultimate midmorning michelada. Hey, it’s technically a cocktail.

Don’t: Forget about tequila and mezcal. With their earthy and smoky flavors, these spirits can work great alongside tailgating staples like hot wings and brats.

Do: Employ real, actual fruit. Fresh juice makes even simple cocktails like margaritas taste much, much better.

Don’t: Go overboard. You don’t want a full menu of drinks that requires you to bring the whole bar cart.

Do: Batch things up. Think pitchers and punch bowls. Doing so will reduce the time you spend mixing drinks, leaving more time to enjoy those drinks, watch games and toss the football around with your friends.

Don’t: Skimp on the ice. Packing your drink with ice cubes keeps things colder, obviously, so your ice melts slower. That means less dilution and better, more balanced flavors.
