The Weekender

Ice Bars, Pastries and a Burger Truck

The weekend’s decisions are final and there are no appeals.

The W Unveils a Whiskey Bar

You’ve got a new bar. It’s called the Root Cellar. It’s downstairs at the W. There’s a fireplace and there are 90 whiskeys, plus barrel-aged cocktails. Show up for their opening party tonight, and grab some gratis bar bites like pork skewers or grilled pears wrapped in serrano ham. In keeping with your “all fruits get meat” policy.

Friday
A Two-Seat Chef’s Counter at Mio
MAMA MIO

A Two-Seat Chef’s Counter at Mio

This isn’t a bad date option. If for no other reason than it can only fit two of you. Twice per night, Mio is rolling out nine Puerto Rican dishes from its new chef’s counter. Expect tuna carpaccio, grilled octopus and cilantro-butter-basted ribeye. Should tide you over until you can get to Vieques.

Wed-Sat, 6 and 8:30pm, $95, Mio, 1110 Vermont Ave NW, reserve at 202-955-0075

Saturday
A Tent Party with Ice Bars and Hot Tubs
POP-UP HOT TUBS

A Tent Party with Ice Bars and Hot Tubs

Wear your mittens to Yards Park. And your bathing suit. Because you’ll find tents with ice bars, vodka snow cones, a beer garden... and hot tubs. And once you towel off, you can grab a seat by the indoor fireplaces or outdoor fire pits and take in some live music. Or just stay in the hot tub.

Tuesday
Z-Burger Takes to the Streets
GRIDDLE ME THIS

Z-Burger Takes to the Streets

There’s a new truck you should be following: Z-Burger’s, which gets rolling next week with its just-greasy-enough burgers, kosher dogs and 14 kinds of milkshakes. Which should stay cold for quite a while right now.

Wednesday
Bakers & Baristas Debuts in Penn Quarter
DANES COOK

Bakers & Baristas Debuts in Penn Quarter

You probably go through most days without even thinking about Danish pastry. But not this day. Because here comes a Euro-style coffee shop with a whole menu of them—cherry/pistachio and cheese/pretzel Danish, for starters. Plus, lunchtime sandwiches, and desserts like kringles and chocolate Sacher torte. And more Danish.
