Things to do for September 04, 2014

The Weekender

Oyster Parties. Beer Parties. Food Truck Parties.

The weekend’s got that look in its eye.

RAISE THE ROOF

The W’s Rooftop Gets a New Look

Apparently, being the only rooftop bar overlooking the White House and the Mall wasn’t good enough. So POV at the W went dark for a month, adding a wall of glowing “red tape,” graffiti walls, three giant brass heads of JFK, Lincoln and Franklin, and a bar overlooking the Mall. Yes, the Secret Service is still watching you.

Saturday
Competitive Food Trucking
TRUCK OFF

Competitive Food Trucking

It’s food trucking’s biggest day of the year. With cooking competitions and industry awards. And it’s all great. But what you’ll be most interested in: the 14 trucks congregating at this Northeast lot and serving you burgers, pho, Korean BBQ and cheesecake. Maybe even in that order.

Sep 6, 11am-7pm, $5, Curbside Cookoff, 1st St NE and M St NE, tickets here

Oysters, with a Chaser of Cake
AW SHUCKS

Oysters, with a Chaser of Cake

So if you really like oysters, know that the Rappahannock guys are hosting an oyster-eating contest at Saturday’s DC Oysterfest. If you simply like oysters, well, have some, along with beer, wine, pickles and BBQ. Then stop by Panorama Bakery, Union Market’s new French sweet shop of pastry, cakes and croissants. To nurse your oyster hangover.

Food Trucks. Bands. Beer.
ATLAS SHRUGGED

Food Trucks. Bands. Beer.

You can go to Atlas Brew Works any old afternoon. But Saturday afternoon is the Northeast brewery’s first anniversary, which means three bands, food trucks and brewery tours. Oh, and beer. Lots of beer. Because it’s a brewery.

Sunday
If It’s Sunday, It’s Half Price
BACK IN BLACK

If It’s Sunday, It’s Half Price

Every Sunday this fall, Black Jack will be showing the NFL games (with sound over their speakers). They’ll have their bocce court open for halftime challenges. And they’ll be practically giving the place away. To wit:

  • 25-cent fried-chicken-style wings (for 1pm games)
  • Half-price drafts, burgers, mussels and pizza
  • 2-for-1 oysters
  • $1 bartender’s-choice shooters (for 1pm games)
Feel free to ask them if the furniture is for sale.

Sundays, 1-10pm (and during all Sunday Redskins games), Black Jack, 1612 14th St NW, 202-319-1612
