Things to do for September 12, 2013

The Weekender

Champagne, Fried Chicken and a Seven-Foot Bear

America voted, and the weekend is not in danger this week.

Thursday
Beer, Pretzels and a Seven-Foot Bear
BEAR WITH US

Beer, Pretzels and a Seven-Foot Bear

It won’t take long. You’ll walk into the Hog’s Apothecary, and in moments you’ll confirm they’ve got everything you need in a beer hall: 36 American beers, six ciders on tap, dartboards, shuffleboard, housemade chicken-pancetta sausage, pretzels and a seven-foot-tall wooden bear named Theo. Yep, everything you need.

Friday
Fried-Chicken Sandwiches at Maverick
GOING, GOING, GONE

Fried-Chicken Sandwiches at Maverick

Your Friday lunch just got a little more blood sporty. See, Maverick has opened for lunch... on Fridays only. And they’re making fried-chicken sandwiches... but only 50, max. And you can call ahead to preorder... but only if you order more than six. So: game on. (Or enjoy your seven sandwiches.)

Fridays, 11:30am-2:30pm, Maverick, 3316 17th St (near Valencia), 415-863-3061

An Alley Party with a Champagne Bar
KATE AND ALLEY

An Alley Party with a Champagne Bar

Taverna Aventine is turning five, and you know what that means: another sure-to-be-legendary alley party. Think live DJ, the Red Sauce Meatballs food truck, a champagne bar and T-shirt cutting, which is either more or less ominous than it sounds. Depending on your views vis-à-vis T-shirt cutting.

Sunday
Roasted Pigs and Cornbread
WHOLE HOG

Roasted Pigs and Cornbread

It’s an amazing feat of endurance. We don’t mean the chefs from Chop Bar, Tribune Tavern, Lungomare and Brotzeit Lokal each roasting pigs at Linden Street Brewery. We mean you, sampling them all and deciding a winner. Really, there are no losers here. Except three chefs.

Next Friday
A Cathedral of Pumpkin Beer
ALTAR’D STATE

A Cathedral of Pumpkin Beer

It’s now time to get your tickets for church. Because next Friday you’ll hit St. Gregory’s cathedral for NotOberfest, which involves pumpkin beers and new seasonal ales—along with good stuff from 4505 Meats and Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream. Cue the choir of beer angels.
