Things to do for August 16, 2012

The Weekender

90 Rums, Competitive Karaoke and Pool Parties

The weekend prefers to talk about the issues.

Thursday
Stop What You’re Doing. Go Get Rum.
RAISING CANE

Stop What You’re Doing. Go Get Rum.

This just in: it’s National Rum Day. Really. And there are zero shopping days left. So grab your nearest deserving compatriot and head to Cuba Libre, where they’re celebrating this afternoon with half off all rum cocktails and their entire list of 90 rums. You’ll discover the holiday spirit quickly.

Aug 16, 4:30-6:30pm, Cuba Libre, 801 9th St NW, 202-408-1600

Sunday
A Battle of the Bands, at a Pool
DEEP END

A Battle of the Bands, at a Pool

Two problems with live concerts: it’s often dark and there’s very little water (the beer you’re standing in doesn’t count). Your remedy: this weekend’s Adult Swim party, featuring four bands poolside, along with BBQ brunch. Please don’t splash the singer.

PIG OUT

Like Brunch on Steroids

We’re going to say something revolutionary: you should skip brunch on Sunday and hold out for something more... extravagant. Like what’s going down on Bourbon Steak’s patio: a whole-pig roast, an oyster bar, housemade soft-serve sundaes, spiked watermelon and bottomless Port City beers. Next week’s eggs are bound to disappoint.

Tuesday
Lobster Rolls Outside the Fairmont
MORE THAN FAIR

Lobster Rolls Outside the Fairmont

Being surprised by something on the sidewalk is almost never a positive thing. Unless it’s a kiosk filled with miniature lobster rolls. Starting next week, the Fairmont is setting up a pop-up of grab-and-go lunch noshes, like smoked-turkey BLTs, prosciutto-and-brie sandwiches and homemade mango Jell-O. Jell-O is always the biggest surprise.

Next Saturday
Food Trucks, Beer and Lots of Karaoke
DRINKING AND TRUCKING

Food Trucks, Beer and Lots of Karaoke

Until someone starts parking a beer truck around the city, you’ll have to settle for this event, which brings together 10 food trucks, each making a dish paired with a different beer. There’s also going to be DC’s first-ever karaoke invitational tournament. And that’s probably enough firsts for one day.
