Things to do for September 04, 2008

The Weekender

The Weekend Starts Here

The weekend is dialing up the heat.

Friday
Mercury Lounge Re-Opens in SoMa
FRIDAY MERCURY

Mercury Lounge Re-Opens in SoMa

Mercury's relocation to the old Sneaky Tiki space brings more room and an expanded Asian-fusion menu, plus lunch specials like Friday's fried chicken. They also promise stronger and more creative cocktails starting next week (in the meantime, couldn't hurt to bring your own).

Saturday
Sam Choy Poke Festival at Hukilau
SATURDAY HANGING TEN

Sam Choy Poke Festival at Hukilau

Grab a Mai Tai from the bar, then bask in the Aloha spirit with tuna poke, hula girls and the main event: a Spam Musubi eating contest. Because watching guys scarf down sushi is so much classier than hot dogs you almost feel bad for Joey Chestnut.

411: Noon-8pm, Sept 6, Hukilau, 5 Masonic Ave (at Pine), 415-921-6242

Saturday
Hornucopia Festival
SATURDAY BRASS

Hornucopia Festival

This new music event brings 35 horn-and-brass bands to the Bay Area to play everything from polka-punk to hip-hop. And you won't want to miss the Brasstastic Parade in Dolores Park—should be a horny crowd.

Saturday
California State Yo-Yo Championships
SATURDAY YO-YO

California State Yo-Yo Championships

Check out the state's best yo-yo talent, then test your own skills with the strings at the Tricks Clinic, where you'll learn moves like the Atom Smasher, which involves a split-bottom entry and underpasses. Because she's tired of seeing you Walk the Dog.

411: $14, 10am-4:30pm, Sept 6, Exploratorium, 3601 Lyon St (at Jefferson), 415-353-0410

Sunday
San Francisco Opera's Opera in the Park
SUNDAY ARIAS

San Francisco Opera's Opera in the Park

Whether or not you're an opera buff, this is a great excuse to lounge in the park for a couple hours with some wine and cheese. Better make the cups plastic, though. We hear that Soprano can really belt it.

411: Free, 1:30pm, Sharon Meadow, Golden Gate Park (at Stanyan and Kezar)

Monday
Cedar Enzyme Bath in Sebastopol
MONDAY DETOX

Cedar Enzyme Bath in Sebastopol

Weekday evenings in September, you and the little lady can grab Twilight Zone rates on Osmosis Spa's incredible cedar enzyme bath. The Japanese version of a mud bath, it uses finely ground cedar heated to 100 degrees to detox, relax...and mind-blow.

411: $130 for two, 5pm-8pm Monday-Friday in September, Osmosis Spa, 209 Bohemian Hwy, Freestone, 707-823-8231
